Celebrate Christmas at Bellevue!
Sunday, December 15, 2024

Sometimes it feels that we are surrounded by darkness. It might be our own circumstances that weigh us down – our health, relationships or finances. Perhaps it is the struggles of those we know – our friends, family or work colleagues. Even if life is going well for you all it takes is a quick look at the news headlines to see the darkness and difficulties faced by so many in our world. For some of us if we take a moment to think about our worries and fears it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed – is there any hope?

Christmas traditions often involve light – flickering candles, lights on the Christmas tree, maybe even lights hanging outside your house - all attempts to lighten the darkness (which seems to last forever in the winter months). The Bible often speaks of light and darkness –especially in the passages we traditionally read at Christmas, telling the story of Jesus - “The Light of the world” coming to earth and meeting people right where they were – walking with them in the middle of their pain and suffering and bringing real hope and change, often in the darkest of circumstances.

The great news is that Jesus is still meeting people today right where we are, shining light in our darkness. This light is life changing and lasts forever. It's for everyone – for you, for me, for your friends, family and colleagues. Real Christmas is not just about lights on the tree, it is about light coming into the darkness – into our darkness, bringing hope where there is no earthly hope. Real Christmas shines in the darkest of places…
