Each of us face all manner of distractions in life. In all our work and play, in all our streaming and
scrolling, we can easily forget Jesus. The gospel can slip to the back of our minds. We lose sight of
the fact of Jesus being both Lord and King. As a result we’re prone to putting ourselves on the
throne of our lives, imagining that everything in life must revolve around us.
The resurrection of Jesus from the dead is at the heart of the Christian faith. It is however more than
a doctrine or a belief which the Christian church holds, it is the great truth that demonstrates the
absolute sovereignty of God, only he who created life can resurrect it after death. The resurrection
of Jesus also brings a huge challenge to each of us. If Jesus is alive then he is deserving of all our
worship. He alone is The King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
Easter gives the church the opportunity to spend some time focused on the resurrection of Jesus,
reminding each other that Jesus is King, the one who came, served, died and rose triumphant.
“Jesus is King and I will extol Him
give him the glory and honour His name;
He reigns on high enthroned in the heavens,
Word of the Father, exalted for us”

This passage on first reading does not seem to be about a King. It's
describing a servant: the one no one notices or cares about, a
servant who is going to suffer unimaginable tortures at the Lord’s
will. Yet this servant, Isaiah says, will be exalted. This servant will, by
his unique service, enable those who have gone astray from God to
be brought back, this servant will satisfy the penalty for sin. This
servant is The Servant King.

Kings today have limousines a Rolls Royce perhaps; in ancient times Kings rode horses, big horses, horses that everyone recognised would only ever be ridden by a King. This King comes however riding a small donkey a beast of burden. Common, ordinary, nothing special, except wonderfully Jesus riding this donkey into the capital city fulfils some ancient words of God that proclaimed to the people that this is the King the long promised Messiah.
