This series looks at a number of Psalms that are specifically quoted in the New Testament in reference to Jesus. Over these seven Sundays we will see a rich picture of the promised Messiah from these beautiful Old Testament songs.

God declares that he has established his King who will conquer all opposition and reign over the whole earth. Whilst the psalm points us to David and his sons who ruled from Jerusalem, its words are only fulfilled in David’s great son, the Son of God and Messiah, Jesus, who calls us to follow him and find true blessedness.
Jesus - The Second Adam - Psalm 8 - David Knowles

Morning Service, Sunday, July 9, 2023
In this song of praise David wonders over the exalted role that God gave to mankind to rule over creation. As we consider this psalm from a wider biblical perspective, we recognize that whilst humanity has failed in its task as a consequence of Adam’s fall, Christ came as the Second Adam, to undo what Adam has done. One day, Christ’s people will rule with him over all creation.

Morning Service, Sunday, July 16, 2023
As he hung on the cross, Jesus applied the opening words of this psalm to himself. We see that this record of King David’s suffering and vindication point forward to Jesus’ death and vindication. It is because Jesus trusted God and suffered that salvation and the worship of God come to the whole earth.
Jesus - The Resurrected One - Psalm 16 - Alex Warren

Morning Service, Sunday, July 23, 2023
On one level, this Psalm speaks of David’s trust in God and desire for God. However, as Peter makes clear in Acts 2, v10 speaks of Christ’s resurrection. Understood in that light, we see that this psalm points us to Jesus’ trust and joy in God for us, taking him all the way to the cross and resurrection. Now, in Jesus, we seek to grow in our own desire for God.
Jesus - The Perfect Sacrifice - Psalm 40 - David Knowles
(Video)
Morning Service, Sunday, July 30, 2023
The writer to the Hebrews shows how King David’s song of deliverance anticipates the Saviour that all of the animal sacrifices pointed forward to. Jesus’ perfect obedient death is the once for all sacrifice for sin. All who seek Christ can truly sing this song of deliverance.
Jesus - The Royal Bridegroom - Psalm 45 - Alex Warren
(Video)
Morning Service, Sunday, August 6, 2023
This is a wedding song addressed to a kingly bridegroom. This bridegroom is a gracious and righteous conqueror who is appointed by God to rule forever. In fact, he is God himself. Who could be so privileged as to be the bride of such a great and lovely bridegroom? Amazingly, it is us – the church – and Jesus is our bridegroom who has rescued us and is making us beautiful.
Jesus - The Priestly King - Psalm 110 - David Knowles

Morning Service, Sunday, August 13, 2023
Here David is speaking of the coming Messiah, who he calls Lord. He is a king who will both rule his people and conquer his enemies. He’s also a priest, like the priest-king Melchizedek. He sacrificed himself for his people, and represents them before God.
