The Noble Task

The Apostle Paul made it his practice to appoint leaders to the churches he founded, they were variously described as prophets and teachers in Acts 13; elders in Acts 14 and in Philippians 1 he mentions elders and deacons.  However they were known it is clear that churches need good leadership and leaders who not only had the qualities described in the Pastoral Epistles but who were also called by God to this noble task. (1 Tim 3 v 1).  Leadership is without doubt a noble task; the Greek word means beautiful, good, worthy and is the adjective used by Jesus of himself as the good shepherd, so it is a Christ like quality.  It is also however a warrior’s quality we are encouraged by Paul to be good soldiers, therefore perhaps the role of the leader is to be at the head of the church army.  This short series explores what scripture says about leadership of God’s people
